Brent H. Blakely
Mr. Blakely’s expertise spans across all areas/aspects of a commercial business trial practice and includes substantial legal experience in the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights owned by individuals and entities including international corporations, recording artists, professional athletes, fashion designers and trademark licensors/licensees. Mr. Blakely also handles the prosecution of client trademark applications and litigates right of publicity, trademark, copyright, and patent infringement claims. In addition to his intellectual property practice, Mr. Blakely has extensive experience in commercial, entertainment and employment litigation.
Mr. Blakely obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Stetson University in 1988 and his Juris Doctor from Pepperdine University in 1991. He clerked for the Honorable Henry Politz, Chief Judge, United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1990 and 1992. Mr. Blakely was a Trial Attorney with the Department of the Navy, Office of the General Counsel from 1994-1996, had his own practice and was Of Counsel with Hewitt & McGuire LLP from 1997 to 2000, and was Of Counsel with Carlsmith Ball LLP from 2001 to 2003.

Mr. Blakely is regularly invited to speak at a variety of intellectual property related forums, including the prestigious USC Gould School of Law Intellectual Property Institute.
Joining the Blakely Law Group in 2006, Ms. Chan has efficiently litigated and managed hundreds of civil actions involving trademarks, copyrights, design patents, business/commercial transactions, and rights of publicity on behalf of various consumer brands, artists, designers, and trademark licensors/licensees. Ms. Chan has worked closely with global brands including Deckers Outdoor Corporation (UGG®, SANUK®, and TEVA®), Luxottica Group S.p.A. (RAY-BAN® and OAKLEY®), Chanel, True Religion Brand Jeans, Coach, and Michael Kors in the development and/or implementation of strategies to prevent and combat the sale of infringing and diverted goods. Accused infringers have ranged anywhere from criminal counterfeiters to national brands and retail chains, and Ms. Chan has successfully negotiated 5 to 6-figure settlements as to a vast majority of these matters.
Ms. Chan routinely counsels emerging brands and start-up companies on strategies to protect intellectual property and trade secrets. Ms. Chan’s extensive litigation experience has provided her with immense foresight into the vast array of potential intellectual property issues that may arise in the course of business, and has thus enabled her to effectively counsel and advise intellectual property owners in a non-litigation context.
Ms. Chan is admitted to practice in the states of California and New York as well as the United States District Court for the Southern, Central, Eastern and Northern Districts of California, the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and the Southern District of Texas. Ms. Chan obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley and graduated cum laude from Pepperdine University School of Law. Ms. Chan was a law clerk at the State Bar of California and has served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Andrew J. Wistrich in the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
Ms. Covington’s practice is focused in the areas of trademark, trade dress, copyright, and design patent litigation. Ms. Covington also has extensive experience in the right of publicity actions as well as business litigation involving contractual disputes
Ms. Covington received a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2010. In May 2014, Ms. Covington received her Juris Doctorate from Pepperdine University School of Law, and was admitted to the State Bar of California in November of 2014. Ms. Covington is also admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Central, Southern, and Northern Districts of California.
Ms. Stuart Alban has extensive experience representing consumer products companies, as well as Internet and technology companies and other businesses, in commercial and intellectual property litigation at the trial court and appellate levels in both state and federal courts, with a particular focus on trademark and copyright litigation. Ms. Stuart Alban also has significant experience in complex commercial litigation involving contract disputes, business torts, and disputes involving the Uniform Commercial Code.
Ms. Stuart Alban obtained her Bachelors of Arts Degree in English Literature and Philosophy from Simmons University in 1995 and her Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California in 2002, where she graduated with an honors GPA. While at the University of Southern California, Ms. Stuart Alban served as Articles Editor for the Southern California Review of Law and Women’s Studies, as Vice President of the Public Interest Law Association, and as an extern for the Honorable Vanessa D. Gilmore, Southern District of Texas during the summer of 2000.
Upon graduation from law school, Ms. Stuart Alban commenced employment at the international law firm Arnold & Porter LLP where she remained until 2010. While at Arnold & Porter LLP, Ms. Stuart Alban was a member of the firm’s prestigious intellectual property and litigation practice groups. Ms. Stuart Alban was admitted to the California bar in February 2003 and has since been admitted to the United States District Court, Central, Northern and Southern Districts of California, the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. She served as a member of the advisory board for the Western Center on Law and Poverty from 2007 to 2010 and is currently a barrister fellow with the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation, a member of the intellectual property section of the California Bar, and a member of the American Intellectual Property Association. Ms. Stuart Alban most recently argued and prevailed before the Ninth Circuit in the matter of Network Automation, Inc. v. Advanced Systems Concepts, Inc.
Juan Pablo Alban
Juan Pablo has over fifteen years of experience as a California attorney for top-ranked global law firms and general counsel including for regulated investment firms and clean energy project developers, among others.
After immigrating from Colombia in 1984, Juan Pablo earned a BA in economics from Dartmouth College in 1997 and a JD from Harvard Law School in 2001. In 2011 Juan Pablo also earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, which the Financial Times has described as the “gold standard” for financial professionals worldwide.
Juan Pablo started his career in the corporate finance and banking groups of Skadden Arps, which Vault 100 consistently ranks in the top 10 of the globe’s most prestigious law firms. He sharpened his teeth closing market-moving mergers & acquisitions, private and public securities offerings, secured bank loan agreements, and debt restructurings. His roles included conducting due diligence, drafting contracts, ensuring regulatory compliance and coordinating closings. Major clients included Penn National Gaming, Public Storage and CSK Auto Parts.
From 2003 to 2008, Juan Pablo was an associate for Quinn Emanuel, a premier litigation firm excelling at taking complex business cases through trial. Juan Pablo was the lead associate in a successful jury trial that secured a favorable jury verdict and nine-figure compensation for Occidental Petroleum. Other major clients included Mattel Inc. as plaintiff in a jury trial based on intellectual property theft; a director of a public company as a defendant in securities litigation; and a consumer plaintiff in a fraud-based class action.
From 2008 to 2013, Juan Pablo was general counsel and executive vice president for Brener International Group, LLC, a private family office focused on direct private equity investments in the U.S. and Mexico. Juan Pablo counseled the firm on due diligence, structuring, raising capital for and executing alternative investments with multiple finance structures, such as LBOs, Rule 144 offerings, PIPEs and cross-border deals. Juan Pablo played a central role and managed all legal aspects in the sponsorship of a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (“SPAC”), from its IPO, to regulatory compliance, to a successful reverse merger with a Hispanic-focused media holding company in a $450M transaction. Juan Pablo also coordinated all internal legal and compliance work, including an analysis of and implementation of compliance under the new Dodd-Frank regulatory framework.
Since 2013, Juan Pablo has provided external general counsel services for various small to medium-sized businesses. These include a renewable energy-focused private equity fund manager registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC); an energy efficiency and solar project developer for commercial and industrial customers; and a U.S. distributor of a Mexican casual sneaker brand. Representative advice for these companies includes coordinating private investment due diligence; coordinating closings of capital raising and solar project finance transactions; and drafting and negotiation of asset and stock purchase and sale agreements, merger & acquisition agreements, private fund formation and governance documents, operating company formation and governance documents, solar energy power purchase agreements and related documents, and offering material for private securities offerings.
